Since the end of 2004, the Anemone “She Changes” has been a striking feature at one of the main gateways to Matosinhos – the Praça Cidade S. Salvador, marking the border with the city of Porto.
Crafted by American sculptor Janet Echelman, this intriguing sculpture is composed of three large steel poles, one soaring up to about 60 meters, coupled with a red and white net (suspended within a ring of 42 meters diameter), which gracefully dances to the rhythm of the wind.

Janet Echelman is a contemporary sculptor, globally recognized for her monumental urban installations that incorporate fishing nets with high-tech methods. Born in 1966 in Tampa, Florida, Echelman graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from Harvard University and went on to pursue a fellowship in Visual Arts at the University of Hong Kong.
Her artistic career took a distinctive turn during a trip to India, where the inspiration from local fishermen’s nets led her to explore the sculptural possibilities of nets and fabrics.
